Internode borer: Chilo sacchariphagus indicus (Crambidae: Lepidoptera)
 

Distribution and status: Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and India

 Host range: sorghum, rice, and pearl millet

Damage symptoms
          There are several boreholes and fresh excrement in the nodal region, along with tighter and shorter internodes. Reddening occurs in the tissues affected.

Bionomics
          White larva with four longitudinal violet stripes and a light brown head. Adult: Light brown with white wings on the back.

Management

1.    Avoid using too much nitrogen-rich fertilisers.

2.    Trichogramma chilonis, an egg parasitoid, should be released six times, starting in the fourth month and happening every 15 days.

3.    Release the following larval parasitoids: Apanteles flavipes and Stenobracon deesae

4.    Apply carbofuran 3G and release the pupal parasitoids Tetrastichus ayyari and Trichospilus diatraeae.

5.    If damage is severe, add granules to the soil at a rate of 30 kg per acre.
