Safflower
Aphid: Uroleucon compositae (Aphididae:
Hemiptera)
Distribution and status
In Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, and Haryana, this bug severely damages safflower.
Bionomics
The aphids are tiny, soft-bodied, black-shining insects. The nymphs are reddish brown in colour and smaller in size. From December until April is when the aphid is active. A female gives birth to 6-56 children on average. In 11–16 days, it completes its life cycle.
The lifespan of an adult aphid is 17 days.
Damage symptoms
The sap from leaves, twigs, flowers, and capsules is sucked by aphids. Height, leaf count, and number of shoots all drastically decline in infected plants. The plants start to wilt, stay stunted, and occasionally dry up. The production of seeds is negatively impacted. The honeydew that the aphids excrete draws a black, sooty mould.
Management
· Spray 750 litres of water/ha with 250 ml of dimethoate 30 EC, monocrotophos 36 SL, or 625 ml of chlorpyriphos 20 EC, and repeat the spray if necessary after 15 days.
· Conserve parasitoid Aphidencyrtus aphidivorus and predator Brumoides suturalis
