Safflower Caterpillar: Perigea capensis (Noctuidae: Lepidoptera)
Distribution and status
Safflower is severely contaminated throughout India.
Bionomics
A medium-sized dark-brown moth with white wavy lines on its forewings, the adult has a dark brown colour. About 25 mm long, smooth, with greenish purple patterns, and humped on the anal segment, the caterpillar is about this length when fully developed. On leaves and stems, a female lays about 60 eggs, either singly or in tiny groups. In 4-5 days, the eggs will hatch. Within two to three weeks, the larva grows to maturity while munching on leaves. It spends 10 to 15 days in the earth as a pupa.
Damage symptoms
The plants are stripped of their leaves by the larvae, which causes them to wither and become stunted.
Management
Ø Spray the crop with either 1.25 L of endosulfan 35 EC or 2.5 kg of carbaryl 50 WP in 750 L of water per hectare.
